So I got the pleasure of sitting down and talking with Shachar Gilad of Soundbetter.com. Gilad and I have been conversing for a little over a week now about having him coming through to be on the site and I am very appreciative that he took time out of his busy schedule to come sit down with us today to talk about his recently new website, Soundbetter.com
Basically Soundbetter.com is a site where if you are a music producer looking for work, you would apply for freelance work with artists and other companies that need audio production done or music composed/designed. The site will allow you to choose how much the job should pay you and you have to write a proposal like you are applying for a job online. It is highly competitive to land a job opportunity at Soundbetter.com, but the opportunities are endless if you are trying to be a music producer. Read below my interview with Shachar Gilad, who is the founder of the website
Tell us a little bit about yourself (Introduction)?
I'm a musician/engineer/producer who spent many years working on music tech products at Apple and at Waves Audio. I have a big passion for music creation.
What is Soundbetter.com all about?
SoundBetter is a destination site for musicians to connect with music production professionals. Millions of musicians are now self-producing thanks to the accessibility of music creation tools. They still often need help getting a to a finished product - things that require expertise like mixing, mastering, production or instruments they don't play. SoundBetter helps them connect with freelance professionals so they can get to a finished product. At the same time we provide a new channel for remote work for music production professionals.SoundBetter is a marketplace not unlike Houzz for home improvement or maybe Dribbble for Graphic Designers.
How can it benefit music business professionals?
Before SoundBetter there was no good place for music production pros to market their services and get remote work. They relied on word of mouth mostly or resorted to building websites and trying to have those sites found (and often realizing how difficult that is). We do that work for them. We give them a place to set up beautiful online presence easily and then market on their behalf, bring the leads to their doorstep.
I saw you worked previously in apple and held positions within audio production, how did that motivate you to start soundbetter.com
Being in this space I saw the growing need. It got to the point where I would get dozens of emails from musicians asking me 'do you know a good mixing engineer who specializes in hip hop?' or 'do you know a good mastering engineer in London who can work at this or that budget?'. There are so many musicians making music on their own now but still needing or wanting to connect with pros for some aspect of their work. I saw the increased openness to marketplaces, with sites like Airbnb and Uber paving the way and figured our industry really needs this. It seemed like a good time to 'democratize' our industry, enable people to get out of the circle that is their city or network of friends, get reviews visible for service providers in our industry.
What advice do you have for people trying to get into the music business?
Make an awesome product. I think it's easier than ever to create music and easier than ever to get your music out there. That also means you are competing with more musicians. I think the key is to write an awesome song and make a recording that sounds good (demos don't cut it anymore, our ears are trained to expect more). Unless you have an awesome undeniable song I think everything else doesn't matter, so write hundreds of songs until you have one that's awesome.
What are your long term goals with Soundbetter.com?
Our goals are to be the destination site for music creators. To be the place musicians, producers and engineers come to during the music production process for inspiration, for networking and for hiring. To increase transparency about who's a good provider and who's not as good. To streamline music creation and production.
Any other plans as an entrepreneur?
Ha! There are many opportunities, but I'm all in with SoundBetter right now.
